When: Sat, May 18, 2024 at 4:00pm

Where:
Secular Hub
254 Knox Ct
Denver, CO, 80205

**This month, we will be discussing Peace & Social Justice, one of the AHA Ten Commitments with Matthew Elisha.**

**Practical Humanism is a semi-regular program of Humanist Perspectives, which is now a combined event with the Secular Hub.** **This is a hybrid event, Live at the Hub or online with Zoom.**

As humanists, we should work to make individual changes that help improve ourselves and advocate for policies that can make for a better world. It can be difficult to always know what practices we can change to make us better persons and what steps we can take to affect changes to improve our world. It helps to learn from others, so we invite you to come to our February Humanist Perspectives for a discussion we call Practical Humanism.

We will take one tenant from the American Humanist Association’s Ten Commitments and the group will share ideas for ways we can make individual changes to become better humanists. When we are done, we should have a list of ideas and methods we can apply in the real world to be more committed to a better life and a better world.
Come to the meeting prepared to share your thoughts and actively participate in the discussion. This will be a team effort to come up with answers that can help everyone attending be better humanists.

This month, Matthew will lead a discussion of the Commitment, Peace & Social Justice. The AHA's Center for Education describe it this way:

**“I will help people solve problems and handle disagreements in ways that are fair for everyone.”**

"True peace involves an intense commitment to social justice and affirms the human rights and personal autonomy of all people. Any level of injustice against groups or individuals signifies existing conflict, even if the conflict isn’t immediate or obvious. We attain peace only by consistently responding to injustice through thoughtful conflict resolution that aims to repair harms and ensure a fair and equitable society moving forward. This kind of conflict resolution is known as restorative justice. In order to achieve a just, peaceful society, we all must take claims of injustice seriously and ensure that those who are impacted most by rights-violations determine the best course forward."

Come to the meeting prepared to share your thoughts and actively participate in the discussion. This will be a team effort to come up with answers that can help everyone attending be better humanists.

**This is a hybrid event, both live in-person at the Hub, AND online with Zoom, your choice. Come to the Hub to join the meeting live with Zoomers on the big screen. We will enjoy a lively discussion, beverages, and appetizers. Feel free to BYOB (beer and wine are OK) or an appetizer to share. OR get on Zoom at home and mingle with the audience to join the discussion.**

The Hub, Jefferson Humanists, and Humanists of Colorado Chapters of the American Humanist Association are very pleased to offer a regular exploration series on the 3rd Saturdays, 4:00 to 6:00 pm., inspired by the Jefferson Humanists. Each session will be slightly different and include several segments to showcase aspects of Humanism through a presentation, videos, movies, forums, and explorations, followed by discussions. We will include time for participants to socialize and get acquainted, in keeping with the chapters' goals of building community.
