With three decisions over two weeks, the Supreme Court of the United States has upended decades of precedent and radically altered the legal fabric of our country. Pundits on the left claim that the “bump stocks” and Chevron decisions essentially dismantle the administrative state and that the immunity decision will unleash a dictator. Voices on the right praise the first two decisions as a remedy for over regulation and a win for small government that will restore a large measure of freedom to all Americans. They view the immunity decision as necessary and driven by common sense.

How can we tell which side is right? Is there any way to remove the partisanship wrapped around this issue to get to the essence of the matter?

At this month’s forum we’ll summarize the cases brought to the court, the justices’ decisions, and the pundits’ claims. To approach this in an even-handed way, we’ll ask an artificial intelligence engine to perform much of the summaries and comparisons for us. After reviewing the fundamentals that AI reveals, we’ll turn the matter over to you to weigh the arguments on both sides.

The Post-Partisan Forum meets on the second Saturdays of the month and strives to give conscientious people a chance to discuss the forces threatening our American polity with civil war and autocracy. We explore these issues from many perspectives and welcome viewpoints that span the political spectrum. We ask only that people’s opinions are fact-based and constructive to understanding or resolving the problems we face as nation.
